Contributions to research
Since its creation on January 1st 2017, IMT Atlantique has inherited all of the research and innovation activities of Télécom Bretagne and École des Mines de Nantes. This new establishment comprises 13 departments of teaching and research, involved in six research labs (five under the French National Centre for Scientific Research and one under the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research). We are specialised in the fields of digital technology, and energy and environment, with very many areas of application.
For our research and innovation activities we have 290 permanent researchers and lecturers, 110 non-permanent researchers (post doctoral students and research engineers) and over 300 doctoral students. Our research and innovation activities are financed by public and private research contracts totalling approximately €18 million per annum.
The school's research has developed through building strong partnerships with higher education institutions and research establishments in the Brittany and Pays de la Loire regions through the research laboratories listed below.

As co-administrator of these laboratories, IMT Atlantique contributes collectively to the strategy and scientific orientations of the above laboratories.
IMT Atlantique is a founding member of the community of universities and institutions from the Brittany and Pays de la Loire regions (Comue UBL) and is qualified to deliver the PhD diploma with the UBL seal.
IMT Atlantique is also a member of the region's Laboratories of Excellence (Labex - see table below) and Equipment of Excellence (Robotex for robotics and Arronax+ for radiotherapy).

On a national level IMT Atlantique is part of Institut Mines-Telecom, combining the Mines and Telecom schools under the auspices of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Digital Technology, recognised academically and industrially for its excellence in both academics and industrial partnerships. Through this network, Institut Mines-Telecom (IMT) is able to propose a very large range of scientific and technical skills to respond to requests on fundamental or applied research topics with important societal issues such as security, renewable energy sources, digital technology, the environment and health.
IMT Atlantique also has a large network of relationships with international research institutions.
This network has been built up through our policy of supporting researchers, research-lecturers and doctoral students through sabbaticals or study trips abroad, and also through participating in major networks of international cooperation. IMT also has a policy of supporting invited researchers. This international network allows us to develop research projects in common or to respond to international calls for proposals (H2020, ANR International, Initiatives…)
Excellence in research at IMT Atlantique has been rewarded by several prizes and distinctions over the last 20 years. A good example is Professor Claude Berrou, a member of the Academy of Science since 2007, who has received many prizes for his work on "turbo codes", including:
- The Hamming Medal in 2003
- The Marconi Prize in 2005
