All researchers on optical communications in the Optics department are members of the MOM/DIM team of the LABSTICC laboratory (UMR CNRS 6285). Our research topics are positioned at the interface between physical layer and network architecture issues.

Optical networks are facing several major challenges:

  • a steady growth of their capacity.
  • increased dynamicity of their patterns, especially in the metro segment.
  •  improvement of their energy efficiency.

In this context, our activities can be divided into three main areas:

  • optical packet switched networks in metro and data center networks, in order to optimize optical transparency, subwavelength granularity and cost efficiency.
  • evolution of core networks, in particular the opportunities resulting from the emergence of a flexible WDM grid and the parallelization of transmission systems.
  • advanced modulation formats for long haul and intradata center transmission.
