VISUAL PERCEPTION AND OPHTHALMIC APPLICATIONS
"Laboratoire de Traitement de l'
In collaboration with the ophthalmology department of Brest University Hospital, our mission is threefold: 1) to assess the impact of new display technologies (3D, augmented/virtual reality) on human vision, 2) to better understand the sensory/oculomotor mechanisms involved in binocular vision and 3) to suggest new tools for ophthalmic diagnostics and orthoptics rehabilitation.
Our activities are divided into 3 areas:
1- Evaluation platform: Viewing conditions offered by modern displays technologies (virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D) actually differ from natural conditions. This discrepancy is often a source of discomfort. The platform aims to:
- assess the impact of modern technologies on ocular health and visual performance (perturbation of the oculomotor/ accommodative system; reduced blinking, reduced attentional visual field, etc.);
- provide recommendations to improve contents and technologies for a better viewing experience.
2- Binocular Vision: "Investigating and developing new display systems allows us to explore basic scientific questions in vision such as the parameters influencing motion in depth perception, the coupling between vergence and accommodation, or the interaction between central and peripheral vision.
3- Ophthalmic applications: Continuous technological progress allows us to investigate a wide range of innovations in eyecare:
- Retinal imaging and image processing. Multispectral imaging presents a wealth of information which has so far been relatively untapped in eyecare. We investigate how multispectral imaging and machine learning can help to improve the detection and monitoring of sight-threatening pathologies.
- Connected Contact lenses and ophthalmic glasses We investigate how wireless embedded sensors in contact lenses could help to monitor various physiological parameters. We also manufacture active glasses (using composite liquid crystals materials) for anti-glare solutions and the treatment of amblyopia.
- Orthoptics rehabilitation: In collaboration with the company Orthoptica, we develop various tools using eye tracking and 3D displays, to better assess binocular vision difficulties and to define new training methods for patients with BV issues or low vision.
