President of Telecom Bretagne since September 2010, he became president of IMT Atlantique Bretagne - Pays de la Loire on January 1st 2017 as a result of the Mines Nantes and Telecom Bretagne merger.
In May 2016, Emmanuel Macron, minister of Economy, Industry and Digital Technology, presented him with the Knight of the National Order of Merit award.
A Polytechnique graduate (1976), Paul Friedel became a doctor of solid state physics in 1987 and carried out post-doctoral studies in the USA. He was awarded the Général Ferrié Grand Prix for electronics in 1996.
Paul Friedel began his career in the Philips research directorate in France before joining the American company, Diebold, in 2002, as vice-president responsible for research and development of automatic teller machines, security systems and electronic voting.
In 2004, the British company, e-San Ltd, specialising in self-monitoring chronic diseases, entrusted him with market analysis of its products for France. From 2005 to 2010, Paul Friedel worked with the France Telecom group, as director of research and strategy for Orange Labs Research and Development. Paul Friedel is also a founding committee member of C.Génial, a foundation for the advancement of scientific and technical knowledge amongst youth.
Paul Friedel has also been chairman of the SEE (Society of information and communication technology electrics and electronics) since June 2009.
He also taught concurrently at ESME-Sudria and ISEP (Paris Higher Institute of Electronics) and has supervised several doctoral theses at ISEN (Advanced technology and digital engineering school) in Lille. Since 2005 he has been a member of the scientific council of the Institut Mines-Telecom.
