Measuring the success of our cross-disciplinary research

IMT Atlantique was created in 2017. It is a very young institution, but nevertheless covers a sufficiently broad spectrum of activities to be able to create synergies and cross-fertilisation between its different research areas and thus develop interdisciplinary research on a human scale into technologies, industrial networks and systems and the environment.

One of the strengths of IMT Atlantique is therefore its ability to approach engineering through interdisciplinarity, and in particular by strengthening the associations between the physical world and the digital world, or between the social sciences and scientific and technological advances. This interdisciplinarity is reflected in the very structure of IMT Atlantique, through cross-disciplinary initiatives (ISTI - Integrated Scientific and Technological Initiatives) for academic and industrial research, in the fields of Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Industry of the Future, Distributed Computing and iOT, or Human Enhancement and Health.

It is therefore still a little early to create an evaluation of our research, but the measures of success for IMT Atlantique's faculty members and research staff who carry out interdisciplinary research are the same as for those who carry out research in a single discipline: grants awarded, publications, laboratory size, and the career path of our faculty members and research staff.

Measurement of interdisciplinary research at IMT Atlantique will acknowledge and include data such as consumption, creation and output (production) while taking into account short, medium and long-term impacts. These are essential elements of a successful interdisciplinary approach.

IMT Atlantique is committed to promoting a climate of confidence where contributions are valued and consensus is encouraged. IMT Atlantique ensures positive leadership and management qualities in its interdisciplinary research teams, personal rewards, availability of resources, infrastructure and professional development, as well as a careful balance of skills and personalities among team members in terms of both expertise and positive working environment.
