Industrial transition

The scope of the industrial transition theme ranges from Industry 4.0 to man-machine interfaces and augmented reality. It includes artificial intelligence and human factors, digital factories or production lines, reconfigurability and adaptability of production systems based on scheduling, production and maintenance planning, and bio-inspired robotics as well as robust and reliable control methods.

In addition, maintaining and controling flow (data, energy, materials) in industry, by integrating the decarbonisation, is at the heart of industrial transition issues. Finally, it also includes the study of market and company structures, measuring the impact of digitalization and the management of change, as well as risk assessment and resilience.

TRANSition in Food – Energy – Ecology

TRANSFEE concerns the acquisition of cutting-edge equipment positioned on the major challenges of tomorrow's industry in the fields of environmental, energy and food transitions. By reinforcing the GEPEA's platforms and technical platforms and by positioning this equipment on a common objective carried by the two different GEPEA supervisors (Nantes University, IMT-Atlantique, ONIRIS, CNRS), TRANSFEE aims to increase scientific excellence while providing concrete solutions on several key issues that are the sober and optimized management of (bio)resources, the preservation of environmental quality (air-water), the material-energy covalorization of residues or industrial waste, and the exploitation of marine resources and in particular microalgae. The TRANSFEE project also consolidates the relationship between research and training by sharing training at all levels (e.g.: BUT, Engineering School, International Master, continuing education).

Home service Operations Planning with EmployeeS preferences and uncertainty

The HOPES project funded by the ANR 2021 with 270 KE is led by a young researcher RESTREPO RUIZ Maria-Isabel on the planning of work schedules and employee rounds over a multi-period horizon for home-based services. HOPES will propose innovative decision support tools to solve these complex problems by taking into account work rules, individual preferences and different sources of uncertainty. To do so, we will rely on the formulation and design of new optimization approaches integrating techniques from data science and deterministic and stochastic optimization. Instead of proposing a method that works only for a specific application, HOPES aims to propose a general framework that can be extended to solve different variants of the problem. The decision support tools developed are expected to improve the quality of service for users, the well-being of employees, and to improve the planning and execution of home service operations.

Mapping Media for Future Democracies

To set out future-proof pathways to strengthen democracy through improving accountability, transparency and effectiveness of media production and expanding active and inclusive citizenship, the project aims to clarify the extent to which European media perform their democratic functions. By applying an innovative multi-method design the project will cover (1) perspectives of both representative and participatory notions of democracy as they exist in European societies, (2) the entire range of news media, regardless of distribution channel, ownership and source of financing, (3) the legal and (self-)regulatory framework under which media houses and journalism operate, (4) the media's potential to promote and support political participation (supply side), and (5) the media use patterns, communication needs and democratic attitudes of the audiences (demand side) in the EU Member States.

FABulous
FABrication of 3D metasurfaces to enable the next generation of high efficiency optical products

FABulous will develop an industrial direct laser writing technology (multiphoton lithography) to structure coatings with nanoscale engineered 3d topography to fabricate high resolution functional 3D metasurfaces for advanced ultra-lightweight products. These metasurfaces will be capable of manipulating light with unprecedented flexibility and will open the possibility of designing and manufacturing smaller, lighter, and more environmentally friendly products, through the replacement of bulky components and/or the chemical coatings currently used to enhance the efficiency and performance of optical products in applications such as the design and fabrication of sensors, automotive day time running lights (DRL) and solar power generators.

Raising a new generation of nuclear experts

Nuclear and radiochemistry (NRC) expertise is necessary to maintain European nuclear operations. It is also relevant in the process of decontamination and decommissioning, waste management and environmental monitoring. Moreover, there are several non-energy fields of NRC applications requiring such expertise, ranging from radiopharmaceuticals, radiological diagnostics and therapy to dating in geology and archaeology and more. The EU-funded A-CINCH project aims at mitigating the decreasing interest in the study of nuclear subjects. It will focus on students and teachers from secondary schools up to academia as well as end users in the field, using a 'learn through play' concept including a virtual radiochemistry laboratory, NRC MOOC, RoboLabs, high school teaching packages etc.

Build digital twins of a critical subsystem composed of humans and cobots in a collaborative task for application in the smart factory of the future

Industry of the Future is characterized by smart automation and connectivity, flexible and adaptive processes, as well as sustainable manufacturing practices.

To realize this ambitious vision, system models that aggregate individual digital models of components or subsystems (digital twins) and processes need to be developed to enable companies to meet the demands of the new industrial economic paradigm. The term “digital twin” is recent but the underlying concepts are not new. Digital twins have been shown to provide real benefits to the production life cycles of companies.

LeArning and robuSt deciSIon SupporT systems for agile mANufacTuring environments

ASSISTANT's main objective is to develop a collection of intelligent digital twins that will automatically adapt to the manufacturing environment. These digital twins will assist in the design and operation of a complex, collaborative, reconfigurable, mixed/multi-model production system based on data collected by IoT devices.
