Master of Science in Engineering "Diplôme d'Ingénieur"

Observation and perception of the environment

Course director

François Gallée

Co-director

Frédéric Maussang

Observing and monitoring the environment is essential today in many sectors:

  • land and sea observation: climate change analysis, resource management (raw materials for industry, energy), pollution monitoring, object tracking.
  • space exploration: analysis of the composition of the universe
  • intelligent transport: hazard detection for autonomous operation
  • health: diagnosis
  • industry: robotics and (non-destructive) quality control

System performance depends on high-quality sensor data, which is then processed digitally. The systems are based on technologies in three main areas: acoustics (ultrasound, sonar), radio frequency (radar) and optics (lidar, hyperspectral camera).

The objective of the Observation and Perception of the Environment (OPE) field is to train future engineers to work with highly innovative environmental observation systems using sensor networks, and the available computing and data processing power.

The key features of this theme are:

  • to provide grounding knowledge both in terms of hardware systems and the associated processing for data formatting
  • to allow learners to specialize by choosing modules in line with their interests: hardware and software design, image processing, robotics, etc.

In order to illustrate and apply the various concepts, teaching will centre around issues such as space exploration or autonomous vehicles, and will include conferences featuring both experts and industrialists.
