Derek Asiedu
Junior professor
IMT Atmantique - MEE

Holder of the “Chair of Junior Professor” in Autonomous Embedded Systems Based on Artificial Intelligence in the MEE department at IMT Atlantique, Lab-STICC

Research Activities:

His research is in intelligent communicating embedded systems, and artificial intelligence for embedded systems and societal applications, which is currently supported by ANR. His research will involve application of embedded systems, machine learning and digital communication in agriculture, healthcare and industry. The research he conducts fits perfectly with the institutions goals of training and researching into applicable societal solutions in terms of digitization, artificial intelligence and climate-friendly solutions. Also, He has applied for the ANR JCJC research grant to study and implement rate splitting multiple access technique using software defined radio. Additionally, He is applying for EU research grants under FARM2FORK, MSCA-PF, ERC, 6G SNS JU and Pillar 4 for research into embedded systems and digital communication applications in virtual reality, precision farming and wireless communication standardization.

Teaching Activities:

At the same time, He teaches machine learning courses with the Mathematical and Electrical Engineering (MEE) Department for the master’s degree in information technology. He also assists in Numerical methods and embedded systems courses within the MEE Department. He also mentors future engineers through master’s internships and term-project programs.

Background:

Derek Asiedu received a PhD and M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering at Hanbat National University (HBNU), South Korea, in 2019 and 2017, respectively.  In 2019, He was a Postdoctoral fellow with the Wireless Intelligent Systems Laboratory (WiSL) at HBNU, working in energy-efficient wireless information and power transfer communication. In 2021, He became a research assistant professor at the Seoul National University of Science and Technology (SeoulTech), South Korea, working on vehicular communication networks and standards. He joined IMT-Atlantique in 2023 as an MSCA postdoctoral fellow, working on an EU-France MSCA-Cofund grant on energy-efficient precision agriculture sensor networks called POWER-PA project. He also acquired the 2024 MSCA-PF research funding to work on urban wireless communication energy efficiency under the project title FORGE-IoT. He then acquired a tenure track position in IMT-Atlantique as an associate professor in 2025.
