Biographie

Charlotte Langlais est maître de conférences au département Électronique de IMT Atlantique (ex-Télécom Bretagne depuis 2017) depuis 2002. Elle a obtenu son diplôme d'ingénieur de l'Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) de Rennes en 1999. De 1999 à 2002, elle a travaillé à France Télécom R&D (actuellement Orange Labs) à Rennes en vue de l'obtention de son doctorat dans le cadre d'une convention CIFRE. Elle obtient son doctorat en électronique de l'INSA de Rennes en 2002. Durant, sa thèse elle a étudié la mise en oeuvre de la turbo-égalisation pour des canaux ionosphériques HF. Elle a également proposé de combiner turbo-démodulation et turbo-égalisation. 

Actuellement, elle enseigne dans le domaine de l'électronique numérique de base et des communications numériques. Elle participe également activement à l'enseignement sous forme de projets. Elle anime le pôle Projets et SAR (Situation d'Apprentissage Riche) qui regroupe les projets semestriels de la nouvelle formation d'ingénieur généraliste sous statut étudiant (FISE). Elle est co-responsable du projet d'ingénieurs du semestre 4 . Enfin, elle a contribué à la conception du nouveau programme de formation d'IMT Atlantique dans le cadre du comité de pilotage du lot Formation. En particulier, elle a animé le groupe de travail dédié aux projets.

Son activité de recherche concerne les communications numériques, en particulier les traitements multi-antennes (MIMO), les systèmes multi-utilisateurs,  les systèmes coopératifs et la prise en compte des conditions de propagation dans le design des algorithmes.

La réalisation de ma thèse à France Télécom R&D (actuellement Orange Labs) sous une convention CIFRE m'a sensibilisé à l'apport de l'innovation et de la recherche pour le milieu industriel. Depuis mon arrivée à Télécom Bretagne, je m'efforce de conserver un lien fort avec ce milieu grâce à la réalisation de contrats de recherche pour des industriels. Les contrats de recherche long terme sont recherchés afin de privilégier un processus d'innovation et de recherche de qualité.

Je participe également à des projets collaboratifs au niveau régional, national et international. La liste de ces projets en cours de réalisation est donnée en bas de cette page.

My PhD work was performed in an industrial context at France Telecom R&D (currently Orange Labs) thanks to a CIFRE convention. I have been aware of the importance of innovation and research in the industry world. Since my arrival at Telecom Bretagne, I have tried to keep a strong link with the industrials thanks to research contracts. Long term contracts are seeking to perform high quality research and innovation.

Mon activité de recherche concerne la mise en œuvre du processus Turbo pour les communications numériques. Toutes les fonctions de traitement du récepteur peuvent être concernées. La conception d’un récepteur itératif passe également par la proposition de structures d’émetteur adaptées. Grâce au processus itératif, nous pouvons, la plupart du temps ,relâcher la contrainte de construction optimale. La construction de l’émetteur peut être ainsi dégradée tout en conservant des performances proches de la structure optimale. Cette activité de recherche est en lien fort avec les axes de recherche relatifs à l'expérimentation et à la conception d'architecture de circuits numériques. En effet, concernant l’axe de recherche expérimentation, les structures émetteur/récepteur proposées sont, dans la mesure du possible, testées en environnement réel grâce à des modèles de canaux réalistes issus d’expérimentation ou de simulation de l’environnement de propagation. Concernant l’axe de recherche architecture, nous nous efforçons de construire des émetteurs/récepteurs réalistes en termes d’implantation hardware. Les critères de latence, débit et complexité sont pris en compte.

 

Depuis 2002, j'enseigne à Télécom Bretagne l'électronique numérique de base et les communications numériques (codage de canal et turbocodes).

Je participe également activement l'enseignement par projet qui est une forme d'apprentissage selon la pédagogie active. Je participe ainsi au projet DEC (1ère année), et au projet d'Ingénieur (2ème année semestre 2). Cette participation active m'a conduit à prendre la responsabilité du domaine d'enseignement Peps (Projets et pratiques scientifiques). Il s'agit d'animer la communauté des enseignants et du personnel support en charge des projets de la 1ere et 2e année.

De 2015 à 2017, j'ai participé à la construction du nouveau programme de formation IMT Atlantique dans le comité de pilotage Formation. Dans ce cadre, je co-anime le groupe de travail Projets et SAR (Situations d'apprentissage riches) pour le programme de formation IMT Atlantique.

%X The expected increase of data rates in future satellite communications (DVB-S2X) will require higher-order modula- tions and sharper roll-off, which makes the transmission more sensitive to non-linear interference due to on-board amplifiers. One solution is the predistortion of the signal that is carried out at the transmitter either on the data sequence (data- based) or on the modulated signal (signal-based). In this paper, we focus on single carrier communication and consider two signal-based predistortion techniques relying on the contraction mapping theorem, optimized from an error defined either from the data (data-optimized) or from the modulated signal (signal- optimized). We compare both schemes according to different figures of merit (normalized minimum square error, adjacent channel interference, total degradation and robustness towards channel identification). We show that, under realistic satellite transmission conditions, including satellite channel model and channel identification, the data-optimized signal predistortion scheme outperforms the signal-optimized scheme in terms of total degradation, whereas the signal-optimized scheme minimizes the adjacent channel interference due to spectral regrowth

%X Millimeter-Wave (mmWave) systems offer extremely large Band-Width (BW) and highly Line-of-Sight (LOS) dominant channels. Many beamforming and power allocation techniques have recently emerged to leverage such channel characteristics in order to enhance the sum capacity and the coverage for multi-user transmissions. However, most of the existing algorithms are practically limited due to full channel knowledge and high complexity requirements. In this paper we introduce a novel, low complexity, angular based beamforming and power allocation framework, that requires the knowledge of the main contributive Directions of Arrival/Departure (DoAs/DoDs) of the propagation channel only. Exploiting the fact that propagation conditions are highly driven by the geometrical structure of the channel in mmWave scenarios, our method relies on the estimation of the leakage caused by each User Equipment (UE) on all the other UEs, approximated from the DoAs contributions. We prove with the simulation results that this approach, in addition to be practically plausible, can enhance the network Spectral Efficiency (SE) alongside with maintaining acceptable data rates for the cell edge UEs.

%X In this paper, the performance of multiuser (MU) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER). We focus on the case of a downlink single-cell scenario with linear precoding as zero forcing (ZF) and conjugate beamforming (CB). This performance evaluation is done over a statistical mmWave 5G propagation channel, using NYUSIM channel simulator developed by New York University in 2015. A study of the channel response characteristics is provided to define the system parameters. Simulation results in single-user scenario show better performance with an increasing number of base station antennas due to the increase of system diversity. For multiuser scenario, the performance degrade for a higher number of cell users due to inter-user interference.

%X Cet article présente une analyse de la consommation énergétique de la norme Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11ac, au niveau de la couche physique. La puissance dissipée par les circuits intégrés des émetteurs et récepteurs est prise en compte en plus de la puissance d'émission antennaire classique. Des simulations permettent d'évaluer la consommation en puissance des composants qui exécutent les algorithmes de traitement du signal, et les résultats sont validés par des mesures et des développements sur circuit logique programmable. %X The need for higher satellite throughtput leads to use multiple-ring constellations, such as the 32-APSK, in order to increase the spectral efficiency. However, these constellations are more sensitive to the non-linear intersymbol interference, generated by the HPA and on-board filters, which can be dealt with by a predistortion scheme at the transmitter. After modelling the satellite channel, we derive a fixed-point formulation of the predistortion problem. Then, we propose a signal predistortion scheme based on the contraction mapping theorem that compensates for the non-linear interference.

%X Abstract-Artificial neural networks are so-called because they are supposed to be inspired from the brain and from the ways the neurons work. While some networks are used purely for computational purpose and do not endeavor to be a plausible representation of what happens in the brain, such as deep learning neural networks, others do. However, the question of the noise in the brain and its impact on the functioning of those networks has been little-studied. For example, it is widely known that synapses misfire with a significant probability. We model this noise and study its impact on associative memories powered by neural networks: neural clique networks and Hopfield networks as a reference point. We show that synaptic noise can in fact slightly improve the performance of the decoding process of neural clique networks by avoiding local minima.

%X Massive MIMO systems are known to be a very promising solution for future 5G systems. The attractiveness of using such a system for millimeter Wave (mmWave) transmis- sions comes partly from the reduced size of a many antenna base station. Furthermore, the beamforming gains that they allow is highly suited to combat the high path losses that such wavelength suffer. Unfortunately the complexity to implement a mmWave Massive MIMO system comes with the difficulty to have a high number of stacked Radio Frequency (RF) chain. Hybrid Analog and Digital Beamforming systems have then emerged to retain a high number of antennas without as many RF chain in order to keep the high beamforming gains. In this paper we first describe a User Equipment (UE) solution allowing the system to form a beam that adapts to its own movement so that it always focuses its energy toward the base station, using an on board analog array and an Inertial Measurement Unit. Then we compare the performance of the known Hybrid solution with a fully digital Massive MIMO system, having as many RF chains as the Hybrid system, but serving UEs with beamforming abilities. Mostly we emphasize how such a system allows for great flexibility and evolutivity, both traits being invaluable features in many future networks.

%X In this paper, the physical layer of the Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11ac standard is analyzed from the energy efficiency point of view. To better assess the energy footprint of Wi-Fi communications, the power dissipate d in the circuits to run the signal processing algor ithms is taken into account in addition to the classical transmission power at the antenna. Simulations and hardware developments on a Field-Programmable Gate Array board provide a reliable evaluati on of the power distribution between transmitter and receiver components. This evaluation enables an identification of the most consuming components, and an analysis of the impact of system parameters on power consumption.

%X This paper deals with the modelization of synaptic pruning in the developing brain, at the informational level. Relying on the hypotheses of clique-based memory and Hebbian learning, we consider several scenarios to try to understand how reliable point-to-point communication may be achieved in the cortex whereas at birth, neurons are connected to a multitude of other neurons, similar to a connection of broadcast type. It is shown that quasi-perfect transfer of information can be obtained in a plausible way using simple rules if a mechanism of synaptic normalization is implemented at the receiver side.
