%X We propose a novel estimator for estimating the amplitude of speech coefficients in the time-frequency domain. In order to avoid a phase spectrum estimator of complex coefficients when using the Fourier transform, we consider the discrete cosine transform (DCT). This estimator aims at minimizing the mean square error of the absolute values of the speech DCT coefficients. In order to take advantage of both parametric and non-parametric approaches, the proposed method combines block shrinkage and Bayesian statistical estimation. First, the absolute value of the clean coefficient is estimated by block smoothed sigmoid-based shrinkage (Block-SSBS). The block size required by the block-SSBS is obtained by statistical optimization. This step enables us to reduce the negative impact on speech intelligibility of classical denoising methods similarly to smoothed binary masking. Second, for refining the estimation, an optimal statistical estimator is added to handle musical noise. For evaluating the performance of the proposed method, objective criteria are used. The experiments enhance the relevance of the approach, in terms of speech quality and intelligibility.

%X Many wireless short packet systems have been recently proposed because of new emerging use-cases in wireless communications. These competing schemes exhibit quite different design choices, at least from the physical layer perspective. An interesting question arising is whether there would be a particular waveform that could best fit the short length requirements in terms of transmission rate. In this paper, we focus on four short packet modulation schemes that are Ultra Narrowband (UNB), Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS), Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) and CP-OFDM. We propose a discrete model for CSS modulation and compare the best achievable transmission rates of the four modulation

%X In this paper, we address the problem of simultaneously detecting and estimating the speech short-time spectral amplitude (STSA) through combinations of the Neyman-Pearson and Bayesian approaches for speech enhancement. The main idea is that a non-continuous cost function, which depends on the absence/presence of speech, is applied to optimal joint detection and estimation for improving performance of mean square error estimators. Furthermore, our proposed method based on the square error of the logarithmic STSA makes it possible for us to reduce much more the background noise without introducing severe signal distortion. Preliminary experimental results demonstrate the advantage of our method in terms of speech quality and intelligibility

%X Intersymbol interference (ISI) cancellation over frequency-selective underwater acoustic channel (UAC) is usually performed efficiently using iterative equalization. To this aim, an interleaver is required between the error correction scheme and the modulation scheme, and the longer the interleaver block length the better the performance. However, in the case of time-varying UAC, the length of the interleaver should not be longer than the channel coherence time, thus limiting the performance. Hence, for time-varying UAC with a low coherence time, small interleaver block length have to be used. In this paper, we propose a small block length coding scheme and its associate joint equalization and decoding algorithm based on Spinal codes. We show its efficiency over static large delay spread channels and static UAC: more precisely, simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a higher bit error rate than the Turbo equalization scheme with the same block length, especially for high spectral efficiency modulations. Simulations of proposed scheme over UAC obtained from underwater sea experiments are also presented which show the promising performances.

%X In this paper, we present a 10x100km transmission experiment of coherent 100 Gbps QPSK-OFDM and 200 Gbps 16QAM-OFDM over both uncompensated G.652 and G.655 fibre lines. 100 Gbps QPSK-OFDM shows error-free performance after 1000 km of transmission with a BER ~ 1x10-7 over G.652 fibre and ~ 1x10-5 over G.655 fibre, opening large OSNR margins for a field implementation. As expected, 200 Gbps 16QAM-OFDM is less efficient, but is still able to achieve 1000 km without error over G.652 fibre line, even if margin with respect to the soft-decision FEC threshold (fixed at BER ~ 2x10-2) is tiny. We also notice that G.652 fibre largely outperforms G.655 fibre at 100 Gbps and 200 Gbps whatever the modulation format considered, reinforcing the interest of G.652 fibre infrastructure for modern optical communication systems using high-order QAM.

%X In various situations surrounding noise can be disturbing or stressful. Active Noise Control (ANC) is an effective technology for noise reduction that works as a good complement of the passive isolation offered by traditional headphones. Digital ANC systems are progressively finding their way into consumer electronic applications, in replacement of conventional ANC devices based on analog circuits. This paper introduces a novel digital ANC architecture based a new class of audio sensors: Pulse-Density Modulation (PDM) MEMS digital microphones. The benefits of the proposed ANC system are highlighted, and an experimental validation is described.

%X We propose a novel method for noise power spectrum estimation in speech enhancement. This method called extended-DATE (E-DATE) extends the d-dimensional amplitude trimmed estimator (DATE), originally introduced for additive white gaussian noise power spectrum estimation, to the more challenging scenario of non-stationary noise. The key idea is that, in each frequency bin and within a sufficiently short time period, the noise instantaneous power spectrum can be considered as approximately constant and estimated as the variance of a complex gaussian noise process possibly observed in the presence of the signal of interest. The proposed method relies on the fact that the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) of noisy speech signals is sparse in the sense that transformed speech signals can be represented by a relatively small number of coefficients with large amplitudes in the time-frequency domain. The E-DATE estimator is robust in that it does not require prior information about the signal probability distribution except for the weak-sparseness property. In comparison to other state-of-the-art methods, the E-DATE is found to require the smallest number of parameters (only two). The performance of the proposed estimator has been evaluated in combination with noise reduction and compared to alternative methods. This evaluation involves objective as well as pseudo-subjective criteria.

En dépit de sa plus forte sensibilité, nous démontrons ici que la complexité d'implémentation du format 16QAM-OFDM à 200 Gbps est gérable expérimentalement, en réalisant une transmission sans erreur sur 10x100 km de fibre standard G. 652.
