Biographie

Ronan Fablet graduated from ``Ecole Nationale Supérieure de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace (SUPAERO)'', France, in 1997. He received the Ph.D. degree in Signal Processing and Telecommunications from the University of Rennes, France, in 2001. In 2002, he was an INRIA post-doctoral fellow at Brown University, RI, USA. From 2003 to 2007, he held a full-time research position at Ifremer Brest in the field of signal and image processing applied to fisheries science. In 2008 he joined the signal and communications department of IMT Atlantique (formerly, Telecom Bretagne) as an Associate Professor, and has been holding a Professor position since 2012. He was a visiting researcher at IRD/IMARPE, Peru (Peruvian Sea Research Institute) in 2011 and at IMEDEA, Spain in 2016. He co-authored more than 150 international peer-reviewed journal and conference papers. He is currently Associate Editor for IEEE JSTARS. His main interests include signal processing and computer vision and applications to ocean remote sensing data.

%X In a world of global trading, maritime safety, security and efficiency are crucial issues. We propose a multi-task deep learning framework for vessel monitoring using Automatic Identification System (AIS) data streams. We combine recurrent neural networks with latent variable modeling and an embedding of AIS messages to a new representation space to jointly address key issues to be dealt with when considering AIS data streams: massive amount of streaming data, noisy data and irregular time-sampling. We demonstrate the relevance of the proposed deep learning framework on real AIS datasets for a three-task setting, namely trajectory reconstruction, anomaly detection and vessel type identification.

%X This paper addresses the understanding and characterization of residual networks (ResNet), which are among the state-of-the-art deep learning architectures for a variety of supervised learning problems. We focus on the mapping component of ResNets, which map the embedding space towards a new unknown space where the prediction or classification can be stated according to linear criteria. We show that this mapping component can be regarded as the numerical implementation of continuous flows of diffeomorphisms governed by ordinary differential equations. Especially, ResNets with shared weights are fully characterized as numerical approximation of exponential diffeomorphic operators. We stress both theoretically and numerically the relevance of the enforcement of diffeormorphic properties and the importance of numerical issues to make consistent the continuous formulation and the discretized ResNet implementation. We further discuss the resulting theoretical and computational insights on ResNet architectures.

%X The growing availability of ocean data brought forth by recent advancements in remote sensing, in situ measurements and numerical models supports the development of data-driven strategies as a powerful, computationally-efficient alternative to model-based approaches for the interpolation of high-resolution, gap-free, regularly-gridded sea surface geophysical fields from partial satellite-derived observations. In this work, we investigate such data-driven strategies for the spatio-temporal interpolation of Sea Level Anomaly (SLA) fields in the Western Mediterranean Sea from satellite-derived altimetry data. We develop and evaluate an Analog Data Assimilation (AnDA) framework, which exploits patch-based analog forecasting operators. Two different types of altimetry data are assimilated: along-track nadir data and wide-swath SWOT altimetry data. Using an OSSE, we analyze the sensitivity of the proposed framework to its most relevant internal parameters. We demonstrate the relevance of AnDA as an improved interpolation method, particularly for mesoscale features in the 20-100 km horizontal scale range. Results report an SLA reconstruction RMSE (correlation) improvement of 42% (12%) with respect to Optimal Interpolation (OI), and suggest an additional potential gain when the joint assimilation of SWOT and along-track nadir observations is considered.

%X Due to the increasing availability of large-scale observation and simulation datasets, data-driven representations arise as efficient and relevant computation representations of dynamical systems for a wide range of applications, where model-driven models based on ordinary differential equation remain the state-of-the-art approaches. In this work, we investigate neural networks (NN) as physically-sound data-driven representations of such systems. Reinterpreting Runge-Kutta methods as graphical models, we consider a residual NN architecture and introduce bilinear layers to embed non-linearities which are intrinsic features of dynamical systems. From numerical experiments for classic dynamical systems, we demonstrate the relevance of the proposed NN-based architecture both in terms of forecasting performance and model identification.

%X —Multi-satellite measurements of altimeter-derived Sea Surface Height (SSH) have provided a wealth of information on the ocean. Yet, horizontal scales below 100km remain scarcely resolved. Especially, in the Mediterranean Sea, an important fraction of the mesoscale range, characterized by a small Rossby radius of deformation of 15-20 km, is not properly retrieved by altimeter-derived gridded products. Here, we investigate a novel retreatment of AVISO products with a view to resolving the horizontal scales sensed by current along-track altimeter data. The key feature of our framework is the use of linear convolutional operators to model the fine-scale Sea Surface Height (SSH) detail as a function of different sea surface fields, especially optimally-interpolated SSH and Sea Surface Temperature (SST). The proposed model embeds the Surface Quasi-Geostrophic SST-SSH synergy as a special case. Using an observing system simulation experiment with simulated SSH data from model outputs in the Western Mediterranean Sea, we show that the proposed approach has the potential for improving current optimal interpolations of L4 altimeter-derived SSH fields by more than 20% in terms of relative SSH and kinetic energy mean square error, as well as in terms of spectral signatures for horizontal scales ranging from 30km to 100km. Our results also suggest that SST-SSH relationship may only play a secondary role compared to the inter-scale SSH cascade. We further discuss the relevance of the proposed approach in the context of future altimetric satellite missions.
